BEST MONTH EVER FOR RECORDED CRIME IN NORTH EAST LINCOLNSHIRE

SMARTER APPROACHES LEAD TO BEST CRIME MONTH EVER

JANUARY 2010 has seen the lowest number of monthly recorded crimes across the North East Lincolnshire region since records began, in 1996, meaning 57 fewer victims of crime in our area compared to the highest recorded crime figure of 3069 in March 2004.

It is no secret that national targets are tight and changes have been made to the way in which the police work alongside the multitude of communities that make up North East Lincolnshire.

These have been made in order to improve the quality service delivered to residents and businesses across the region.

They have led to ongoing reductions in area's such as burglary and night time economy related violence which can have a lasting impact on victims.

It shows that the division is moving in the right direction but we are striving to achieve further reductions and build on public confidence in the future.

To put these reductions into perspective, January 1997 saw a total of 2071 recorded crimes which actually rose to a peak of 2879 in January 2004 however this year January 2010 has seen just 1309 crimes being recorded across the division.

Detective Chief Insp Bob Clark said: "It is pleasing to see the ongoing hard work throughout the division is starting to bear fruit however there will be members of public out there who still feel we could do more to improve on the service we deliver and that is what we intend to do.

"Along with our partners, we are constantly looking at new ways to tackle crime and disorder issues that cause the most concern throughout the area and how to encourage members of public to work with us in order to make North East Lincolnshire a safer place to live, work or visit.

"For example, making residents aware of emerging issues as soon as we identify them and advising on how to reduce the chances of being targeted has seen significant reductions in burglary in area's traditionally targeted by criminals. This is just one example of how we are looking at involving our communities more in order make life harder for those looking to commit crime.

"Although we feel there are still further improvements to be made in areas such as satisfaction and in particular the perceptions of crime and disorder across the area these figures certainly show that we are moving in the right direction and it is to be hoped that residents will look at what they can do to support our work in the future to continue reducing the number of crimes and victims across North East Lincolnshire."

LATEST CRIME FIGURES FOR THE EAST MARSH WARD SHOW MASSIVE REDUCTION IN REPORTED CRIME

The latest reported crime figures for the East Marsh Ward where released today by Humberside Police, and were posted on their website. The figures show that the average number of crimes in the ward has decreased (note: the figure are taken over a 3 month period and compared with the same 3 months last year).

It is worth noting that the figures over the last year have consistently improved, but this month they have showed a massive improvement on the previous period – this show that our partnership working is beginning to pay dividends. Well done everyone!

• Overall level of crime in the ward has decreased by 22.2% (Over the last 12 months)
• Burglary has decreased by 7.6%
• Robbery has decreased by 16.7%
• Vehicle crime has decreased by 20%
• Violence has decreased by 6%
• Anti-social behaviour has decreased by 22.2%

WHO’S GOING OUT TONIGHT? WARNING TO BANK HOLIDAY DRINKERS TO STAY SAFE!

Revellers are being urged to enjoy themselves, BUT stay safe this weekend.

Humberside Police has launched a campaign reminding partygoers of drinking too much.

Adverts will be run on screens in pubs and clubs across North East Lincolnshire as a warning about not overindulging during the Bank Holiday weekend.

Police say that there has been an increase in alcohol-related incidents during August over the past two years.

North East Lincolnshire’s licensing officer, Ken Stone, said: “Most people plan to go out and have good time with friends. However, drinking irresponsibly can result in you getting into any number of situations, some of which may leave you injured, facing a criminal offence, or even worse.

“I work very closely with both licencees at local venues and the door staff operators to make North East Lincolnshire a safe and enjoyable area to enjoy a drink.

“This is not something we can do on our own, however, and I would ask those going out in the area – particularly over the bank holiday weekend – to take some responsibility for their own safety.

“I want people to know their own limits when drinking alcohol on an empty stomach, as this greatly reduces your tolerance to alcohol. Please take note of some of the suggestions and enjoy your nights out.”

As well as adverts in pubs and clubs, images from the campaign – which is titled Who’s Going Out Tonight? - will be featured on posters, beer mats and smoking bins.

The film advert – which will also be shown on television – shows two drinkers who are enjoying some drinks but become volatile and violent when they have had too much alcohol.

Police have also launched a website, www.onetoomany.org.uk, which shows the advert and offers advice.

Councillor Steve Beasant, portfolio holder for community safety and public protection, said: “This campaign shows in stark and convincing terms just what dangers can arise from excessive drinking.

“By working in conjunction with the police’s licensing team and the council’s trading standards and licensing team, the partnership will be educating people that, with care, they can enjoy a bank holiday to remember for all the right reasons.”

‘STOP THE SNEAK THIEF’ CAMPAIGN

Humberside Police has launched a campaign which provides you with some precautions that can help deter a burglar from breaking into your home.

Did you know that most burglars are not master criminals - they’re opportunists. In nearly a third of all burglaries the residents had left windows or a door open when they went out.

Please download this leaflet which provides guidance on the many ways in which you can take positive action to prevent yourself becoming a victim of burglary. There are many ways you can deter a burglar from breaking into your home. The more you have the safer you are.

North East Lincolnshire Council’s Safer and Stronger Communities Partnership are working closely with the police with the aim of cracking down on opportunist burglars within our local communities.
Police will pretend to be opportunist thieves in a crack down on burglary.

Officers will be on the streets of North East Lincolnshire looking for signs that may attract opportunist thieves – whether windows have been left open or doors unlocked.

If such a sign is spotted, police will put an arm-shaped leaflet through the window or door, showing how easily a burglar could get in. It is the first time that such tactics have been used in the area.

Supt Lauren Poultney, who heads up operations in North East Lincolnshire, said: “In the past, we have tried a number of different approaches to get the message out to reduce the number of insecure burglaries the area suffers.

“It is to be hoped the use of the leaflets will catch the attention of residents who will receive one when they least expect it.

“Almost a third of all our burglaries could have been prevented by simply ensuring any easy access points are not left insecure, even if you are only in your back garden.

“Burglary tends to be an opportunist’s crime and we are urging residents to help us. A relatively small action such as shutting a downstairs window or not leaving a valuable item on show could stop an unwanted visitor entering your home.”

“Always remember to lock your doors if you go out in the garden because most burglars simply open the door and walk in, they don’t use force. It only takes a second to stop a thief, but if you don’t take action they can do untold damage.”

EAST MARSH INVOLVE – APRIL MEETING

The April Meeting of East Marsh Involve will be held tomorrow night, which is the last Tuesday of the month (as usual), April 28 and will be held at the Grimsby Neighbourhood Centre and will start at 6 pm.

The meeting as usual is open to all members of the East Marsh Community and the aim of this community meeting is to discuss community issues; with the purpose of overcoming ongoing problems, improve service and report regularly on all issues raised at previous meetings.

Guest speaker: Marcus Czarnecki will be present at this meeting to talk about the newly launched Community Payback Scheme.

EAST MARSH INVOLVE – FEBRUARY MEETING

East Marsh Involve (EMI) is a community led organisation that was set up to represent the residents of the whole of the East Marsh Ward. They hold monthly meetings where matters of mutual concern can be raised with and discussed with your Ward Councillors as well as with representatives from Humberside Police, Shoreline Housing Partnership and many others.

This month’s meeting will be held this coming Tuesday, 24 February 2009 and will start at 6 pm – as usual the venue will be the Grimsby Neighbourhood Centre which is situated on the corner of Wellington Street and Weelsby Street.

As usual the agenda will include a Humberside Police Report, Ward Councillors Report, Development Worker’s Report and other matters of interest relating to the East Marsh.

Prior to the main East Marsh Involve meeting there will be a meeting of the Priority Action Team, which will start at 5 pm and will be held in the sane venue. The aim of this meeting is to discuss Neighbourhood Crime issue, which will then be priotorised by the police prior to the next meeting.
